Our riverboat tours are part of the hospitality and entertainment industry, delivering a "fun" (and safe!) experience to our customers. We find that the best folks on our crew are people who love working with other people and enjoy an outdoor-type experience.

Crew positions at Shearwater are Pilot (boat operator), Steward and Deckhand. Here are the job descriptions:

PILOT

Pilots or boat operators have - as their principal function - the task of "driving" the boat along her designated course and return, including leaving from and returning to the dock. They are also responsible for overseeing boat and passenger safety during their shift, including assessing weather and other conditions that may result in postponement or cancellation of departures or early return to dockside.

The Pilot performs an examination of the condition of the vessel at the start of each shift, according to a detailed checklist, and is responsible for making a full report on all related matters to company management at the close of the shift. Shifts are as long as ten hours, and as short as three, depending on the schedule of the day. All crew must wear a uniform as directed.

  • Candidates must be at least 19 years of age.
  • Candidates must be able to pass a medical exam.
  • Candidates must have passed First Aid and CPR certification.

 Training will be provided to qualifying candidates. Trained pilots earn up to $15/hr

STEWARD

Stewards must be at least 19 years of age, possess valid First Aid and CPR certification, and be capable of passing a medical examination. Stewards are expected to be cheerful and at ease with the public. Stewards wear comfortable uniforms, and are responsible for the following specific tasks:

  • Prepare and maintain the vessel for daily operation (including cleaning as necessary and minor repair operations.
  • Welcome passengers on board, and instruct them about safety equipment and use of lifejackets.
  • Prepare for, and carry through, casting off from the dock under the direction of the Pilot, and stow lines and equipment.
  • Prepare for, and carry through, returning to and tying up at the dock under the direction of the Pilot, stowing lines and equipment and assisting passengers to disembark.
  • Collect fares from passengers and handle food and beverage sales. Operating a cash register, counting and reporting cash, and ringing off till at end of shift are part of these duties.

Training will be provided to qualifying candidates. Trained Stewards earn up to $12/hr

DECK HAND

Deck Hands must possess valid First Aid and CPR certification, and be capable of passing a medical examination. Like Stewards, they are expected to be cheerful and at ease with the public, wear uniforms, and assist the Steward with the following specific tasks:

  • Prepare and maintain the vessel for daily operation (including cleaning as necessary and minor repair operations.
  • Welcome passengers on board, and instruct them about safety equipment and use of lifejackets.
  • Prepare for, and carry through, casting off from the dock under the direction of the Pilot, and stowing lines and equipment.
  • Prepare for, and carry through, returning to and tying up at the dock under the direction of the Pilot, stowing lines and equipment, and assisting passengers to disembark.
  • Collect fares from passengers and assist the Steward with food and beverage sales. 

Deckhands are in a training position; they earn $9/hr for the first two weeks, and $10/hr when they join the regular crew. Those who qualify as stewards or pilots will see their wage increase accordingly.
